Millbrae Station (also known as Millbrae Intermodal Terminal) is an at-grade Bay Area Rapid Transit and Caltrain station located in Millbrae, California. This station consists of three main tracks for BART and two for Caltrain. An island platform provides a cross-platform connection between the two systems (for heading north to San Francisco), the first (or second) of its kind west of the Mississippi River. (The VTA light rail Mountain View Caltrain station, opened sometime in 1998 could be actually the first cross-platform connection in the west.) Additionally, the station is a regional bus hub and its multiple bus bays are served by several SamTrans lines.

Currently, two BART tracks and one BART island platform are usually out of service, and are instead used as a de facto rail yard to store trains not in service. The other Caltrain track is served by a side platform. Occasionally to remove trains from service, passengers would exit into the Millbrae Station through this island platform.

The concourse mezzanine is elevated above the platforms.

The original Millbrae Station was located some 200 feet to the south and was converted to a museum. Before the present Millbrae Intermodal Terminal was constructed for the BART San Mateo extension's terminus, Millbrae Station was a crucial stop along the Caltrain line as it provided a connection to what was then a free Caltrain shuttle bus between the station and the nearby San Francisco International Airport. The trip may only now be accomplished by using BART and costs $1.50 as of June 2006. BART service at this station began on June 22, 2003. [1]

Millbrae Station was once served by BART trains from San Francisco that did not make an additional stop at the Airport, as the tracks were designed to allow for this type of running. Two main lines operated the San Mateo Extension - one to the Airport, one to Millbrae, and a shuttle train between Millbrae and the Airport. However, since San Mateo County is not part of the BART district and does not pay taxes directly to the district, SamTrans is responsible for the extension's operating costs, and the right to modify service along the extension. BART service patterns have been modified several times, and currently all BART trains to Millbrae first stop at the Airport.
