"Milkshake" is a pop/R&B song written and produced by The Neptunes for American singer Kelis's third studio album Tasty (2003). The song was released as the album's first single in the winter of 2003. It reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands. In the United States, "Milkshake" became Kelis's biggest success to date on Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at number three. "Milkshake" is Kelis's biggest hit worldwide, peaking at number four in the United World Chart with more than two million points total, and has been included in the countdown 2004 (Top 40) at number thirty-five (2.603.000 points), but later beat it with "Trick Me" at number twenty-seven (2.894.000 points).

In the United Kingdom, "Milkshake" has become the biggest hit of Kelis' career, staying at number two during four consecutive weeks on the UK Singles Chart and selling 225,000 copies.

The song earned Kelis a Grammy Award nomination in 2004, in the category "Best Urban/Alternative Performance".

[edit] Covers/Parodies of Milkshake

The overt sexual nature of the song has spawned many parodies, while the original song was played on the following comedy films: Mean Girls (2004), Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), Date Movie (2006), and Norbit (2007). In 2006, CKE Restaurants used an edited version of the song during commercials for Hardee's and Carl's Jr. milkshakes. One version, called "Cow Shake Off", features two men shaking two cows as though dancing to the music.

New Zealand pop-punk band Goodnight Nurse recorded a furious and energetic version of the song as a B-side to their 2005 single "Our Song". [1]

Lounge cover band Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine also covered the song as a swinging big band version on their 2004 album I'd Like a Virgin.

In the fourth season of the animated series Family Guy, on the episode Sibling Rivalry, it featured Peter Griffin shirtless, squeezing his pecs together and singing the song to entertain the prisoners which were surrounding him. [2]

In an episode of the sitcom According to Jim, Jim's overweight brother-in-law, Andy, comes in wearing a tight-fitting wardrobe, consisting of a pink top and black tights. When Jim questions this apparel choice, Andy responds "this milkshake brings all the girls to the yard."

[edit] Music video

The video – directed by Jake Nava – begins with Kelis walking in the middle of a street with common traffic noises in the background. The sound stops and the music beings to be played as she walks into a coffee shop called "The Yard", which explains what she says in the lyrics of the song, "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard". She begins to catwalk throughout the coffee place as she takes off her jacket. She orders a milkshake and begins to blow bubbles into it (a possible allusion to oral sex). She continues to prance throughout the restaurant and walks into the kitchen, "helping" the chef remove biscuits from the oven as she purposely moves near him, yet he shows no interest in her and she leaves in dismay. The scene quickly switches to Kelis dancing in the middle of the room while a disco ball shines on top. The video soon ends with Kelis intimately speaking to a different chef while milkshake machines overflow unnoticed to the dancing patrons.
