Military crest is a term in military science that refers to the shoulder of a hill or ridge rather than its actual crest (highest point). It is the highest contour of elevation from which the base of its slope can be seen without defilade.

Defensive forces usually locate themselves on the military crest. This gives them the ability to see approaching attacking forces and leaves room for withdrawal uphill under pressure.
