Military Road (Isle of Wight)

The Military Road, also officially named 'Military Road' on street maps for its entire length, is a section of the A3055 regional coast road on the Isle of Wight. It starts at Chale in the East and ends at Freshwater Bay in the West. The high standard of construction means that the road has needed little major work since it was built in the late 19th Century. However, this has changed recently, as the road has had to be closed on several occasions to repair damage caused by sea erosion[1] [2] [3].
The road from Chale to Niton, whilst of similar construction and mostly from the same time period, is not normally covered by the term 'Military Road' as its name on street maps and signs is different.
The section from Brook to Freshwater Bay is a Clearway, so stopping on this section is only permitted at the 5 car parking areas, of which one is free, and the rest are operated with a charge to those who are not members of the National Trust. Along the rest of the route, there is no such restriction, but most motorists choose only to stop in one of the other designated car parks.
