Category talk:Militaries
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've reorganised things slightly in the categories because military as a category is wider than militaries. I envisage militaries being used to categorise the actual organisations, like the Luftwaffe, Royal Navy and United States Navy. Military should be used for wider things like military bases and doctrine. David Newton 12:40, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Military articles and categories of dependent territories
User:Huaiwei and User:SchmuckyTheCat have removed military of Hong Kong and category:military of Hong Kong from category:militaries, citing reasons such as "Hong Kong has no military", "superflous" [to be categorised under both category:military of the PRC and category:militaries], [category:militaries] "is for independent states with no military or dependencies with one. Not a dependency with no military" ([1] [2] [3] [4] [5]). Meanwhile, articles such as, but not limited to, military of Greenland and military of the Faroe Islands are still kept in category:militaries. As there are relatively fewer dependent territories than sovereign States, and military of dependent territories are very often the responsibility of the sovereignty holders or military alliance which the sovereignty holders are members, it is necessary to figure out how these articles and categories related to dependent territories should be handled under the this category. — Instantnood 06:30, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Wait, you're the one who added this cat to Faroe Islands, and you use that to back up the assertion that your the Chinese military base in Hong Kong deserves to be part of the category on national militaries? Round and round it goes. SchmuckyTheCat 06:41, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
- I am not the one who did it for military of Greenland. I did it for the Faroe Islands because both Greenland and the Faroe Islands are under Danish sovereignty. — Instantnood 06:46, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Anyone who looks at the case of Greenland can tell that it probably gets such special treatment because it houses foreign military installations. We dont find this in the Faroe Islands or HK. Still, the article for the Faroe Islands is a prime candidate for deletion, just as it is for the other two articles.--Huaiwei 16:03, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

- Anything wrong with what I did? I removed it when I discovered the person who added that category was none other then yourself.--Huaiwei 16:03, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sort by continent?
As it currently stands Category:Militaries contains over 200 articles and categories. Perhaps it would make sense to introduce a new level of sorting the various military forces by continent or region to make things a bit tidier? I was thinking of an organizational structure that goes something like:
Category:Militaries (top) > Category:Militaries of *REGION* > Category: Military of *COUNTRY*
As for regions perhaps we could have something like:
- Category:Militaries of Africa
- Category:Militaries of Asia
- Category:Militaries of Europe
- Category:Militaries of North America
- Category:Militaries of South America
- Category:Militaries of Oceania
And so on. Suggestions are welcome, if no one has any objections I'll start working on it. -Loren 02:49, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Categorization
Category:Militaries should not be a sub-category of Category:Militaries by country, but the other way around. Articles in Category:Militaries by country should be under Category:Militaries and the other way around, too. Ze miguel 14:51, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Military not shown?
the Military of Azerbaijan is not being shown in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Militaries can somebody sort this out?
