Mike enjoyed a lengthy career in which he made two Olympic teams and raised the American record three times. He also enjoyed great success at the Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Relays, winning four pole vault titles, each at a meet record height. His last victory came at a height exactly one foot higher than the first. He also holds the distinction of being the first vaulter to clear 18 feet in the competition.
Mike's best year was 1984. Shortly after winning his third Mt. SAC title, in a one month period he raised the American Record three times by a total of almost three inches. He concluded his campaign with a silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympics.
Mike won three national titles, the first two World Cup competitions, and two Pan-Am titles. His PR jump of 19-2 in 1988 still places him among the top 15 U.S. all-time performers.
