Mike Mangold (born October 10, 1955 in Cincinnati, Ohio[2]) is an American commercial airline and aerobatics pilot. He competes in the Red Bull Air Race World Series. His best performance is first place, which came in the 2005 event. His nickname is "Mungo".[1]
Mangold began his career as a fighter jet pilot for the US Air Force, going on to Top Gun. At Top Gun, Mangold graduated as first in his class and earned the "Outstanding Graduate" award.[3] During his military career, he flew numerous missions in the most dangerous zones with a F-4G "Wild Weasel" V Phantom. After leaving military, he became a commercial airline pilot, and started in 1990 to fly aerobatics.
Mangold has over 16,000 hours of flying time, including 2,500 hours of military fights and 3,500 hours of aerobatics. Currently, a Boeing 767 pilot by American Airlines, he enjoys skydiving, hang gliding, snow and water skiing.[3]
Mike's wife Julie was once a test pilot for the US Army and now is also a commercial and aerobatic pilot. They have a son Nicholas, 6 years old, who loves doing rolls in his father's aircraft, and a daughter Melissa, 3 years old.
