[edit] Background

Beebe was born in Amagon, a small town in Jackson County, Arkansas. He was raised by his mother, a waitress, and never met his father. As a child Mike and his family moved often, living in Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, Houston and Alamagordo, New Mexico, before moving back to Arkansas and graduating from Newport High School in 1964 [1].

Beebe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Arkansas State University in 1968, where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity, earned and a law degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1972. A veteran, Beebe served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He practiced law in Searcy, Arkansas for 10 years after graduating law school. In 1982, he was elected to the Arkansas State Senate, where he would serve for 20 years. In 2002, he was elected Attorney General for the state.

Beebe and his wife, Ginger, have three children.

On June 14, 2005, Beebe announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party's nomination to run for Governor of Arkansas. Beebe defeated former Republican Congressman and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) chief Asa Hutchinson as well as two minority party candidates in the general election on November 7, 2006.

Former President Bill Clinton campaigned for Beebe in Arkansas in the week before the election, and Beebe's campaign raised twice as much money as Hutchinson's. President George W. Bush had campaigned for Hutchinson and appeared at a rally before the election in northwest Arkansas, a Republican stronghold.

With the results fully in, Beebe defeated Hutchinson 55%-40% Green Party nominee Jim Lendall and independent candidate Rod Bryan each collected two percent of the vote.

Beebe reminded Arkansans that no one governs alone, and he took a moment to remember the late Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, the Republican who withdrew from the governor's race when he learned he had a life-threatening blood disease. Beebe said Rockefeller was a good man who cared about Arkansans. Beebe also told supporters he'd received a gentlemanly call from Hutchinson -- who pledged his support in moving Arkansas forward. Hutchinson conceded defeat, saying that "the people of Arkansas have spoken."

Beebe was sworn in as governor on January 9, 2007.[1]

[edit] Trivia

  • His election is notable, for perhaps being the first time an incoming governor has shared his first and middle name with his predecessor, with the two being unrelated (Beebe's full name is Michael Dale Beebe, and his predecessor is Michael Dale Huckabee).
