Midori liqueur

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Midori is a bright, green-coloured, honeydew melon-flavoured cordial made by Suntory. It is manufactured in Mexico, though it was originally made in Japan until 1987. It began life in 1978 with a launch party held in New York's infamous Studio 54[1].

Midori is usually 20-21% alcohol by volume. The name comes from midori, the Japanese word for "green".

As it is extremely sweet, Midori is rarely consumed by itself. It is generally used in a mixed drink or cocktail; for example, a Midori Illusion. Midori is usually mixed with lemonade, fresh lemon juice, lime juice, pineapple juice or orange juice. Sour flavours combine well with Midori and serve to balance its sweetness.

Popular in Australia is the drink "Raiders Lime", which consists of Midori and milk. It is the drink of choice among many Rugby League fans and is named for its resemblance in colour to the jumper of the Canberra Raiders rugby league club. It is customary to chant "Na Na Na Na" to the tune of the Raiders' theme song while consuming Raiders Lime.[citation needed]
