Midnight Sun (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Midnight Sun" (1954) was originally an instrumental composed by Lionel Hamption and Sonny Burke, now consider a jazz standard. Subsequently, Johnny Mercer wrote the words to the song.

[edit] Story behind the lyrics

According to Furia,[1] Johnny Mercer was driving along the freeway from Palm Springs to Hollywood, California, when he heard the instrumental on his car radio and started to set words to the song as he drove.

By this time in his life, Mercer's days of heady collaborations with composers were over. He was composing lyrics in the isolation of his car with only his car radio for a collaborator.
