Midnight Love was the final studio album recorded by soul singer Marvin Gaye, mostly written, produced, and arranged by the performer himself. Released in October 1982, the album Included the hit single "Sexual Healing". Midnight Love rose to #1 on the R&B album charts for eight weeks and #7 on the pop album charts, and became the most successful album of Gaye's career with over 6 million copies sold worldwide, as well as the only RIAA certified triple-platinum album for sales exceeding three million units in North America. The album was recorded for Columbia Records (CBS) after Gaye and Motown disbanded earlier in 1982 after a collaboration of over 20 years.
"Sexual Healing", the biggest hit on the album and his first RIAA certified million seller, won Gaye two Grammy Awards in 1983; one for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and one for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. The album itself garnered a nomination the next year for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Two years after its release, Gaye was shot and killed by his father, the Rev. Marvin Pentz Gay, Sr. The album was re-released in 1998 as Midnight Love & the Sexual Healing Sessions and featured outtakes of the songs that were featured on the album. One of the outtakes from the album, "I've Got My Music", was sampled and revamped into a hip-hop/soul collaboration with rapper Erick Sermon for the 2001 hit, "Music" which would become Marvin's 41st Top 40 single on the pop charts.
In 1989, Midnight Love was ranked #37 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80's.
