Midnattens Widunder (English: The Monster of Midnight) is a folk metal album by the Finnish band Finntroll. It was released in Finland in 1999 by Spinefarm.

The album is notable for being the first full-length album released by Finntroll, and is the closest thing to a black metal album the band has ever created, featuring a less folk-influenced and more raw style that eventually subsided in the band's later works.

[edit] Storyline

The lyrical content of this album follows a continuous storyline, detailing the legendary Troll-King Rivfader, who leads an army of trolls and goblins to destroy the world of humans. This ongoing story shows the influence of classical opera, which is also seen in the music of certain songs, such as Svartberg. The lyrics contain some anti-Christian ideas, but given the context they are not to be taken seriously- among other things, they are also "anti-human", being written from the perspective of trolls. While some black metal could actually be seen to encourage acts of anti-Christian violence, the lyrics of this album, as with much of Finntroll's work, are too far-fetched to be seen as genuinely anti-Christian, at least to the extent of encouraging violence.
