Middlebury, Indiana

Middlebury is a town in Elkhart County, Indiana, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 2,956.
In the early 1830s, settlers came from Middlebury, Vermont, to locate in Indiana. Later, in the 1840s, Amish families came from Ohio and settled in the countryside surrounding the town.

Middlebury is located at GR1.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,956 people, 1,068 households, and 822 families residing in the town. The population density was 335.7/km² (869.8/mi²). There were 1,099 housing units at an average density of 124.8/km² (323.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.02% White, 0.17% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.41% of the population.
There were 1,068 households out of which 42.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% were non-families. 20.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the town the population was spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $55,000, and the median income for a family was $60,313. Males had a median income of $42,188 versus $24,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,613. None of the families and 1.7% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 8.0% of those over 64.

Two major manufacturers of recreational vehicles, Jayco and Coachman, have production facilities in Middlebury. Syndicate Systems' largest facility, for the manufacture of retail shelving is also located in town.
The Middlebury Community School system attracts many families to the area. The system includes:
- Jefferson Elementary School
- Middlebury Elementary School - before 1968, this building housed Middlebury High School.
- Orchard View Elementary School (built circa 1995 on same grounds as middle and high schools)
- York Elementary School
- Heritage Middle School (built in 1974, expanded in 1993)
- Northridge High School (built in 1969, expanded in 1989, current planning to replace this facility by 2009)
The Middlebury Library opened in 1991, and was expanded a decade later.
