It was established in 1973 as Houston Vocational Center. It was renamed as the Houston Area Vocational Center in 1985, and was granted an exansion to a four-county service area consisting of Houston, Peach, Pulaski, and Dooly counties. It was renamed as Middle Georgia Technical Institute in 1987, and finally renamed as the present Middle Georgia Technical College in 2000.

From 1993-1998, the college was moved to a new 83-acre site on the southern outskirts of Warner Robins, although the original campus continues to be used by the college on a greatly reduced scale.
