If you don't want to read the article(s), the most important points here are:

1. Stand at least an arm's length away from a running microwave to avoid any serious radiation.

2. Pregnant women especially shouldn't get too close to microwaves, since human fetuses are the most succeptable to damage from radiation.

3. Don't run a microwave if it has nothing in it, because this may eventually lead to leakage.

4. Don't tamper with a microwave door to make the microwave work while still being open.

5. Microwaves don't get hot enough to sterilize anything, so if you're canning your own products at home and want them to be as bacteria-free as possible, use something other than the microwave to kill of germs.
