Micro Cars
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Micro Cars is a car company based in Peliyagoda, Sri Lanka. Founded in 1995, they produce the Micro 800 mini-car, the Micro MPV Junior van, and the Micro Trend hatchback.
As Sri Lanka’s first ever car,the ‘MICRO’ is designed, developed and prototyped to be manufactured locally with at least 60% of local content. The prototype was prepared in 1999 with the running chassis, making its debut run in December. The body was modeled in styling clay and then transferred to composite for final analysis in June 2000.
Its first car was legally registered only in 2003 after a lengthy battle with the motor car registration department of the country.
The Micro car uses a lot of composite materials which the company says makes for a more flexible production process.
“Because we use fibre, it is flexible when it comes to changing the design and the quantity,” “We do not manufacture in thousands, therefore this fibre technique is good to turn out limited number of designs for a small market.”
With the achievement and recognition MICRO CARS LTD gained in the transport industry, the government of Sri Lanka contracted with MICRO CARS LTD to design, prototype and manufacture the “Lanka Econo Rail”.
Centrex recently signed an Agreement to represent the Micro Cars manufacturing system to other nations seeking to establish a locally-run and operated car assembly company.
The Agreement with Micro Cars also gives Centrex an option to acquire up to 40% interest in Micro Cars. Centrex has been asked to help support Micro Cars' fulfillment of this request from the Sri Lankan Air Force by looking into possible financing arrangements through US entities.
