Mickey's PhilharMagic is a 4-D film at the Magic Kingdom theme park in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA and at Hong Kong Disneyland in Hong Kong SAR.

At Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Mickey's PhilharMagic is located opposite Cinderella's Golden Carrousel in Fantasyland where The Legend of the Lion King was previously located. Mickey's PhilharMagic is a 12-minute long show featuring 3D effects, interactive smells and water as well as a number of characters from Disney movies. It is shown on the largest purpose built 3D screen ever made, at one hundred and fifty feet wide.

The attraction is unique in being one of a very select amount of attractions in Disney theme parks, in which Walt Disney Imagineering has collaborated with another division of The Walt Disney Company - in this instance it was Walt Disney Feature Animation, who also joined forces with Walt Disney Imagineering to develop the Fantasmic! shows at Disneyland and the Disney-MGM Studios. Legendary Disney animator Glen Keane re-rendered Ariel from The Little Mermaid in 3D, returning after rendering her in 2D in the original movie. Nik Ranieri, supervising animator of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, also returned to animate that character in 3D.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The story goes that Mickey Mouse is performing with his orchestra - PhilharMagic - at the Fantasyland Opera House in the Magic Kingdom. When you enter the building there are clever quirks put in by the Imagineers like posters advertising past performers, such as Hades from Hercules. Before the show starts Donald Duck puts on Mickey's magic hat (seen first in Fantasia) and gets pulled into a whirlwind of magic and music. He loses the hat in the Disneyverse, and passes through scenes from The Little Mermaid, Fantasia, Aladdin, Peter Pan, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast trying to get it back. It ends with an explosion and Donald being launched straight into the audience. An Audio-animatronic of Donald, appears in a balcony wall, struggling to get out.

[edit] Trivia

  • The majority of the music in the waiting area plays music from Fantasia 2000.
  • Most of Donald's dialogue is edited from older appearances when Clarence Nash was still Donald's voice. Tony Anselmo only recorded 4 lines for the film.
  • The plot of the entire film resembles the same scenario (trouble ensuing while trying to make it cease) as what happened to Mickey in the The Sorcerer's Apprentice of the 1940 Disney classic, Fantasia.
  • Most of the original voice cast reprised their original character roles in each of their own respective Disney films, excluding Peter Pan (who had a different voice) and Simba (which was only an archived audio track).
  • According to Disney staff members at Walt Disney World, an estimate of about 80 talented musicians and/or background singers performed the music for the film as well as the return of famed composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin) and lyricist Tim Rice (Aladdin, The Lion King), who arranged the music for each song they had worked on since some verses or lines of these songs were skipped for this attraction.
  • In the Aladdin sequence, the city of Agrabah was the largest 3-D environment ever made by Walt Disney Feature Animation.
