Mick O'Connell

Mick O'Connell (born January 4, 1937) was a very successful Gaelic footballer from County Kerry in Ireland.
Mick O'Connell was born on Valentia Island just off the coast of County Kerry in 1937. He was famed for rowing across from Valentia to the mainland for training and matches with the Kerry senior football panel. Regarded as one of the game’s most accomplished and stylish players, he was renowned for his spectacular high catching and unerring point-scoring from dead ball positions. He played in nine All-Ireland senior football finals for Kerry and was on the winning sides of 1959 (when he was captain), 1962, 1969 and 1970.
Other achievements of O'Connell's include six National Football League medals (1959, 1961, 1963, 1969, 1971 and 1972), a Railway Cup medal in 1972 and an All Stars award at midfield in the same year. He played club football with Valentia Young Islanders.
O'Connell's autobiography, "A Kerry Footballer", was published in 1974. O'Connell was also named on the Gaelic Athletic Association's Gaelic football Team of the Millennium.
