Michele Ashman Bell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michele Ashman Bell is one very talented writer of LDS fiction. She writes about everyday people who go through everyday experiences, but she is able to present these trials or thrills in such a way as to capture her audience’s full attention.

Michele grew up in St. George, Utah and she currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and four children.

Some of her published works include:

  • Without A Flaw
  • Perfect Timing
  • Timeless Moments
  • A Pathway Home
  • Love Lights the Way

Michele has actually had many rejections to her writing and yet she persevered through it all. The way that she describes what writing does for her is amazing, she says “There's something so wonderful and fulfilling about the creative process of developing characters and storylines and pouring your heart out on paper that can't be matched by anything else. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to write. “

At the time that she was writing Michele was also having and raising her four children. She said that as a young girl she was a avid journal keeper and that she was much more able to describe her feelings on paper than she was verbally.

When asked where she gets her ideas Michele said “We all have access to story ideas in our everyday lives. But it’s a writer who takes an idea and turns it into a story. I like to play the, “What if”, game with ideas. I’ll take a simple concept and ask what if . . ., and then fill in the blank. Sometimes nothing comes out of it and the idea flops. Other times the idea grows and multiplies until it takes on a life of it’s own and a story is born. When I get stuck for ideas I call friends and family and ask, “What would you like to read about? What things do you feel are important issues we need to learn about?” If I can write about something we can all relate to, then we can all learn and grow together.”

Another question that Michele is frequently asked about her novels is; are her characters real people? She said: “Sometimes my characters are loosely based on people I know. Mostly I take single characteristics from people rather than use them as a whole, although Rich, in my first series, was patterned a lot after my husband. On the first draft of the story I was told that Rich was just too perfect, too nice. Just like my husband. I had to give Rich some flaws after that to enrich the story, but I like my husband just the way he is!”
