[edit] Biography

Michalis Hatzigiannis (Μιχάλης Χατζηγιάννης) was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in November 5th 1979, although his parents originate from Keryneia, from where they fled following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. He is a graduate of the Cyprus Music Academy (Royal College of London) with a degree in piano, guitar and music theory.

At a very young age he started his career in Cyprus with three records that all went platinum.

In May of 1998 he represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest. He had an excellent performance interpreting the song “Genesis”, a composition of his own.

Later in Athens, Greece he collaborated with the composer Yiorgos Hadjinassios and the lyricist poet Michales Bourboulis to create the album “Aggigma Psychis” (Touch of Soul), which was released in December 1998 (containing music pieces and songs for the TV series bearing the same title) and soon went platinum. The two songs that stand out are “Agigma Psychis” and “To Soma pou Zitas” (The Body You seek).

In March of 2000 he released his first solo album with the title “Paraxeni Giorti” (Strange Celebration). Important composers and lyricists contributed to the making of this album, which was to produce some of the biggest hits of that year. The song “Mono Sta Oneira” (Only in Dreams) stayed at No 1 in the Greek radio airplay for several weeks, while two other songs of the same album, “Paraxeni Giorti” and “Kai tha Hatho” (I’ll disappear), had similar success. This album went double-platinum and became a career landmark for the young singer-songwriter in the Greek music scene. In November of the same year, he started his live shows in Athens with great success.

Early in 2001 he released the cd single 'Den Eho Hrono' ('I Have No Time'). It soon reached the top of the charts and went platinum. Later, in the same year, he appeared live with the great Greek singer Haroula Alexiou to great reviews. That summer, he toured Greece for the first time.

In the spring of 2002 he released his second solo album “Kryfo Fili” (Secret Kiss), which has since gone triple-platinum. This album contains a series of big hits such as “Eisai Edo” (You Are Here) “To S’ Agapo” (I Love You), “Horis Anapnoi” (Breathless), “I Ekdromi” (Excursion), “Kapnos” (Smoke) and others. This album, which underlines Michalis' creative talent, established him as one of the most successful singer-songwriters and a promising performers in the Greek music scene. In the summer he toured Greece once more with even greater success, while in the winter he shared the same stage with another Greek icon, singer Dimitra Galani.

In 2003 he released 'Monos Mou' (All Alone), an E.P. containing five songs, which became triple platinum. One of the songs, 'An Mou Tilephonouses' (If You Called) became a hit and the demand for strong airplay kept growing for months; to the present day it is one of the most popular Greek ballads. In the summer of 2003 he toured all over Greece appearing in 63 shows each of which were completely sold out.

In the winter of 2004, he continued his live shows both in Athens and in Salonika with great success.

He received 3 awards in the official Greek music awards in 2003 and 4 in 2004, including the award for the best male performer of the year.

In April 2004 , Michalis released his third -much awaited- solo record, 'Akatalili Skini', which was expected to boost his carrier to new heights and increase his popularity in the Greek music scene, which it duly did.

On April 30th 2004, Michalis represented Cyprus at the official enlargement ceremony which took place in Warsaw, to mark the accession of 10 new countries in the EU.

In the summer of 2004 he toured all over Greece and he sang at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens 2004. In winter he made about 100 appearances in Athens and Salonika with the hugely popular singer, Pashalis Terzis.

In the summer of 2005 he had another big tour all over Greece and ended in September at the Theater of Lycabettus in Athens with two sold out concerts, which were recorded. In October he travelled to Australia for the first time for three concerts. In November he cooperated with a very well-known Greek singer, Antonis Remos, in Athens; their appearances ended in April.

In March 2006 he released the first live album of his career from the recorded concerts in Lycabettus in September with three new songs: 'De fevgo','Den ime edo gia kanena' and 'Miazoume' which all became big hits! The live album also contained a dvd with scenes from the concerts, backstage and photos.

Later in April, he toured in Canada and the USA with George Dalaras and in May he went to Salonika where he made some appearances with Natasa Theodoridou, a Greek singer. In summer he toured all over Greece appearing in 50 sold out concerts. In August he released a new single called 'Ola i tipota' (All or nothing).

In December 2006 he released his fourth studio album called 'Fili ke ehthri' (Friends or Enemies) and many songs became big hits: 'Na ise eki', 'Esthimata', 'Xeria psila' and other. On December 15th, he started his appearances in Vox in Athens.
