Michael Stifel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Stifel (1487 - April 19, 1567) was a German mathematician. He discovered logarithms and invented an early form of logarithm tables decades before John Napier. He published "Arithmetica integra" in 1544.

Stifel attempted to use the Bible to predict the apocalypse. He predicted that Judgement Day would occur on October 19, 1533 at 8:00 AM. When this prediction failed, he did not make any other predictions.
