Michael Stern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Charles Stern (born 3 August 1942) is/was a British Conservative politician. Stern contested Derby South in 1979 before becoming MP for Bristol North West in 1983. He represented the seat for 14 years. In the 1992 election, he held on by the extremely narrow margin of 45 votes - but in 1997, unhelped by adverse boundary changes - lost the seat to Labour's Doug Naysmith by 11,382 votes.
In 1994 Stern, along with fellow Tory MP's Edward Leigh and Lady Olga Maitland, tabled over 80 amendments to the Civil Rights (Disabled Persons) Bill. These amendments were in fact drafted by Government lawyers and the Minister, Sir Nicholas Scott, later apologised for misleading the House[citation needed].
