Born into a musical family, Michael Shapiro has since an early age expressed himself with music. Mr. Shapiro holds a Master's degree in music from The Juilliard School of Music. Principal composition teachers included Elie Siegmeister, Vincent Persichetti, and Sir Malcolm Arnold. Mr. Shapiro also studied solfege and score reading with the renowned Renee Longy.

Michael Shapiro has composed for every medium, including works for solo voice, piano, chamber and orchestral music as well as television, film (including the score for the classic film Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff), and opera.

Michael Shapiro's works have been widely performed in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and he has received numerous honors and commissions. First performances of his works have been heard over National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting System, the Israel Broadcasting Authority, Sender Freies Berlin (SFB), as well as major radio and television stations in New York including WQXR and WCBS-TV.
