Michael Pointer, code named Guardian, is a fictional character, a mutant in the Marvel Comics Universe. He first appears in New Avengers #16 as the unwilling host of the Collective.

[edit] Fictional character biography

A mutant with the ability to absorb the energy of others, Pointer works as a U.S. postman in North Pole, Alaska. Because of his powers, he inadvertently becomes the focal point of the mutant energy "lost" after the Decimation. This energy hovers above Earth, all the while maintaining the disembodied mind of deceased mutant Xorn. After absorbing this energy, Pointer becomes the being known as the Collective. With his body posessed by Xorn's consciousness, Pointer goes on a rampage across North America. Upon entering Canada, the Collective kills most of the original members of Alpha Flight.

The Collective is later defeated and apprehended by the New Avengers while on the island of Genosha. The team places Pointer in jail after wresting the Collective from his body and sending its energy into the sun. Following the super-hero Civil War, Pointer is released from jail to atone for the damage caused while the Collective inhabited his body. He now wears a suit similar to that of Guardian (ironically, the man he killed) and has joined Omega Flight. The suit, given to him by Walter Langkowski, is designed to help him better control his mutant powers.
