Michael O'Brien (Irish politician)

Michael O'Brien is an Irish Labour Party politician.
He is the first candidate in Carlow / kilkenny to use an online election diary http://obrien1.blogspot.com/ to keep the electorate engaged in his campaign.
He is due to contest the Irish general election, 2007 in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency with fellow labour candidate Cllr. Jim Townsend. Cllr. O'Brien stood as a Labour candidate in the Irish general election, 2002, polling strongly.
Michael O' Brien first got involved in politics when he joined the British Labour Party as an emigrant in London in 1960. He is one of the country's most experienced local politicians, having served the people of Kilkenny as a member of Kilkenny County Council for 20 years, and as its Chairperson on three occasions.
He also served as Chairperson of the South Eastern Health Board in 1991, and the General Council of County Councils (GCCC), 1994 & 2005. He is currently Chairman of the Labour Councillors Association.
As a public representative, he has served at local, regional and international levels, becoming Leader of the Socialist Group of the Congress of Local & Regional Authorities of The Council of Europe (CLRAE) from 1996 - 1999. He was a member of the Commission on Town Local Government 1993.
A member of SIPTU he has served the Labour Party: Administrative Council 1982 - 1988, Alternative Candidate for Leinster European Election 1990, Candidate General Election 2002.
