Michael McDonald (kickboxer)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Anthony McDonald (born February 6, 1965) is a Canadian kickboxer who had challenged K-1, best known for his gladiator trunks, dyed blonde hair, cut physique, and superb technical abilities. He is a black male of Canadian citizenship, who currently trains in Vancouver, British Columbia. This makes him one of the few Canadian kickboxers to have achieved international acclaim. He is called The Black Sniper, because of his methodical way of picking apart opponents, while still conserving energy. While many K-1 fighters specialize in either using kicks or their punching ability (examples: Remy Bonjasky is mostly a kicker, while Mark Hunt mostly uses his punching power), McDonald is dangerous with both. A relatively late-bloomer, within the last four years he has established himself as one of the remarkable North American fighters.
He boasts wins over legendary Rick Roufus, the lethal Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović, and Dewy "Black Kobra" Cooper. He also lost a highly controversial decision to the then current K-1 King Remy Bonjasky for another Grand Prix championship, in which he and Bonjasky were the finalists. In 2004 McDonald won the K-1 USA 2004 North American Grand Prix Championship for the third time in three years. Although he is reaching the end of his career, he manages to keep a strict diet and training regime to continue his quest to Tokyo. He has yet to win the Tokyo Dome championships (the highest honor a K-1 fighter can win), but hopes to achieve that goal before he retires.
