Michael Main (born December 14, 1989, in Florida) is a baseball pitcher at DeLand High School in DeLand, Florida. His fastball reaches 99 miles per hour and he runs a 4.37 second 40-yard dash. He played on four national AAU championship teams as a 9-, 10-, 11- and 14-year-old.[1] In 2004 he performed superbly on multiple big stages, garnering Baseball America's praise as the top 15-year-old in its annual Baseball For the Ages feature. [2] His fastball was clocked as high as 94 mph when he helped lead Team USA's Youth National Team to a second-place finish in Mexico in a Pan-American qualifying tournament for the 2005 World Youth Championship. Michael also carries a 4.1 GPA. [3]
As a freshman, he hit .407 in 86 at-bats and was 2-2 with a 2.34 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 10 walks in 42 innings. [4] In his sophomore year at DeLand, Michael was 6-0 with a 0.70 ERA as he struck out 59 in 38 innings of work. He also batted .350 with two home runs, six doubles, a pair of triples, and 10 RBI’s.
As a pitcher, his junior season got off to a slow start due to tendonitis in his rotator cuff but he was at his best when the playoffs came around as he went 3-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 31 innings leading DeLand High to the Florida Class 6-A semifinals in Sarasota. [5] As a junior, Main also hit .402 with 10 doubles and 26 stolen bases. [6]
Over three seasons at DeLand high, Main has a .358 career batting average and 58 stolen bases. [7]
In the 2006 playoffs, Main had many memorable appearances. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Spruce Creek High in his first playoff appearance, beat Fletcher High 1-0 in a one-hitter, and then spun a complete-game four-hitter against Oviedo High in a 2-0 victory that earned DeLand a trip to Florida's Class 6-A semifinals in Sarasota. [8]
During the summer of 2006, Michael participated in various all-star games. These appearances included the East Coast Showcase in Wilmington, N.C., and the Aflac All-America game. [9] At the Aflac All-America game, he was one of six nominees for the third annual Aflac National High School Player of the Year Award, named after Jackie Robinson. The award is given to the country’s top prep baseball player. [10]
In the fall of 2006, Florida State baseball announced the signing of 12 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The 2008 class will feature 10 players from the state of Florida and two from Georgia and among the group is the top-rated pitching prospect in the nation, Michael Main [11]
A trading card of Michael was featured in the February 2007 edition of Sports Illustrated KIDS magazine.
