Gunter is an authority on Kurds in Turkey and Iraq and has written seven books on the Kurdish struggle. He is frequently consulted by media members for analysis and comment on breaking news in the Middle East.

After earning his B.A. in American history from Columbia University, he went on to receive his M.I.A. from SIPA and a doctorate in international relations from Kent State. Gunter has taught political science at Tennessee Tech since 1972. He is only the second faculty member in Tennessee Tech’s history program to win both the university’s Caplenor Faculty Research Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award.
