Michael Lampard

Michael Lampard was born in 1986 and commenced classical singing training at the age of seven studying with Suzanne Ortuso. He is currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Music degree at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music where he is the first recipient of the DJ Motors University of Tasmania Scholarship for Music. In 2004 he was awarded Trinity College ATCL (distinction) and in 2005 AMEB Licentiate of Music L.Mus. A. He was the recipient of the Margaret Raward Award at the 2004 Conservatorium of Music Directors Prize and was also a finalist in the 2005 Directors Prize.
In 2005 he performed the role of Guglielmo in the opera Cosi Fan Tutte as part of the Rome Opera Festival in Italy, where he was the first Australian and the youngest person to be selected from an international audition. He regularly performs solo recitals of lieder, opera excerpts and English art song. In 2006 Michael has been offered a scholarship to appear as soloist in A Mid-summer Opera 2006 in Sydney. Michael has had success in competitions locally and nationally particularly with prizes for lieder and Australian art song. As well as winning a great deal of awards, he was also a semi-finalist in the Herald Sun aria, the Australian Singing Competition, twice a semi-finalist for the Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship a finalist in the National Liederfest. In 2006 he won the Hobart DJ Motors Operatic Aria.
Michael has been featured on ABC television on programs including Stateline and nationally broadcast "7.30 Report".
Opera and oratorio performances include roles in ‘La Serva Padrona’ (Pergolesi); ‘Cinderella’ (Maxwell-Davies) – Australian premiere; ‘For No Apparent Reason?’ (Griffiths) – World Premiere; ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ (Mozart); ‘Da Ponte in Absentia’ (Koukias) – Concert Workshop Premiere; “Love’s Lesson’s Learned” by Sussmann - World Premiere; “Touch Wood” (Pompili) Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and ‘Vesperae Sollemnes De Confessore’; Faure’s ‘Requiem’; Durufle’s ‘Requiem’; Handel’s ‘Messiah’; Koukias’ “Prayer bells’ – Hobart Premiere and “Troparion 2 – Only Begotten Son” (World Premiere) ”. As well as concert appearances including ‘Five Mystical Song’s and ‘Songs of Travel’ (Vaughan Williams) ‘Gesange Des Harfners’ (Schubert); ‘Kindertoten-lieder’ (Mahler); “Songs of the Fleet” (C.V. Stanford); and ‘An Die Ferne Geliebte’ (Beethoven).
Michael has performed with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Productions, Rome Festival Orchestra, Rome Opera Festival, Bel Canto Australia, Bel Canto Young Opera, IHOS Opera, IHOS Laboratory, Ice Breaker Productions (Adelaide), Tasmanian University Musical Society, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music Concert Choir, Tasmanian Chorale, Launceston Philharmonic Society and the Hobart Orpheus Choir. Conductors Michael has had the pleasure to work with include: Myer Fredman, Gary Wain, Simon Reade, Jean Louis Forestier, Fritz Maraffi, Simon Kenway, Timothy Sexton, Joseph Ortuso and Jonathon Grieves-Smith. He has also worked with such esteemed accompanists as Karen Smithies, Dean Sky-Lucas, David Mc Nichol, Janet Perkins and Sharrolyn Kimmorly.
Composition also plays a major part in Michael’s musical life, having studied under Douglas Knehans and Constantine Koukias. He has composed many works including a chamber opera “Succubus”, a children’s opera “Magic Mountain”, a mass setting and numerous song cycles and other vocal and choral works which are regularly performed. He also composed a work “Desperate World” which reflected on the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Michael has also studied conducting under Jean Louis Forestier, and now conducts Bel Canto Australia and is the musical director of the male vocal ensemble Ensemble Del Sarte.
Michael started teaching singing before his 15th birthday and has since been teaching privately with students having success in local competitions and eisteddfods.
Future engagements include: The premiere of Don Kay’s song cycle “Four Bird Songs of Shaw Nielson”; excerpts from Stanfords ‘Songs of the fleet’ with the Orpheus Choir. Also, in 2006 Michael will perform Handel’s “Messiah” with the Launceston Philharmonic Society and as baritone soloist in Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ with the Friends Singers, Mozart’s “Missa Longa” with the Hobart Orpheus Choir. In 2007 Michael will appear as Aeneas in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” for 10 Days on the Island, the role of Colas in “Bastien and Bastienna” for Bel Canto Australia as well as conducting the musical “Huckleberry Finn” for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the premiere of his children’s opera “Magic Mountain” for Bel Canto Australia. Also in 2007 Michael plans to complete his honors degree at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, specializing in German lieder culminating in a performance of Schubert’s song cycle ‘Winterreise’.
Michael is engaged and is looking forward to getting married in mid-2008.
