Michael J. Govan serves as the President of the Augustus Group, an International Insurance Consulting & Brokerage Company. The Augustus Group is the exclusive Agent of Mutual Benefits Assurance Company (MBA) in Lagos Nigeria. The Augustus Groups works with multi-national reinsurance companies and advises MBA with a host of other products including but not exclusively of Life Insurance, Kidnap & Ransom and Mortgage Insurance.
Mr. Govan is also the President of The Legacy Group, (www.dclegacy.com) providing government relations and strategic communication support to select group of clients. Legacy enjoys a close affiliation with the law firm Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin. Mr. Govan has over 25 years of government and business experience. His understanding of the governmental process and extensive relationships with key leaders around the world enables The Legacy Group to offer effective strategies for corporate and governmental solutions. Mr. Govan has been focusing primarily on projects in the Caribbean and Latin American, but has worked on projects around the world. He has had the opportunity to travel throughout Latin America and has met many of the Presidents and key governmental leaders. Legacy is also affiliated with the consulting firm Corporacion Maritima, based in Madrid, Spain. Mr. Govan also enjoys a close working relationship with many of the Ambassadors that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council and has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East.
From 1991 to 1995, Mr. Govan worked in many of the Republics of the former Soviet Union. He traveled extensively throughout the region on behalf of US companies wishing to export or establish new business opportunities in this emerging market. Mr. Govan also worked closely with educational exchange programs that trained thousands of executives from the region.
In 1989, Mr. Govan served as President of The Jefferson Group; a large privately owned government and public relations Company in Washington, D.C., representing Fortune 100 companies and a host of public interests before Congress and throughout the federal government.
From 1985 through 1988, Mr. Govan was Vice President of Bush and Company, a firm specializing in fundraising and government relations. He worked with national political campaigns and private organizations. Mr. Govan also specialized in State and Local Government affairs.
Mr. Govan served as Executive Assistant to former Governor Luis Ferre of Puerto Rico and provided assistance in federal liaison between Washington, DC and Puerto Rico from 1983 through 1985. He worked with the White House Task Force on Puerto Rico, Private Sector Initiatives, Caribbean Basin Initiative, and the One-Year Anniversary of the Liberation of Grenada and the Economic Summit of the Industrialized Nations in Williamsburg in 1983. In this position, Mr. Govan traveled throughout the Caribbean and South America.
In 1981, Mr. Govan was appointed and served in the Domestic Affairs Office of then Vice President Bush, where he was responsible for research with the Federal Agencies and Congress. In 1980, he worked with Ambassador George Bush at the Detroit Republican Convention and then with the Reagan/Bush Inaugural in 1981.
In 1978, Mr. Govan was elected to the Mecosta County Board of Commission in the State of Michigan. He served as chairman of the Personnel and Hospital Committees. He also served on the West Michigan Regional Planning Commission, which set economic development goals for Western Michigan. He is a Graduate of Ferris State University and Detroit Catholic Central High School.
For the Past 25 years, Mr. Govan has served in government at the State and Federal levels and has been engaged in the political process. He has advised the leadership in Congress and the White House on critical issues throughout the years. As a business leader, he is now major contributor to the campaigns of selected congressional and presidential candidates.
