Michael Hofmann

Michael Hofmann (born 1957, Freiburg, West Germany) is a German poet and award-winning translator. He is the son of Gert Hofmann. He grew up in England and was educated at the University of Cambridge. He is now a professor of English at University of Florida. He was awarded Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 1995 and nominated again in 2003.
He was one of three judges for the 2006 PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry (Hofmann and the other two judges, Timothy Liu and Vijay Seshadri, awarded the prize to Linda Gregg).
Hofmann was one of the judges for the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize. His translation of Durs Grunbein's Ashes for Breakfast was shortlisted for the 2006 International Griffin Poetry Prize.
He has translated a number of major works from German into English, including novels and stories by Joseph Roth, Wolfgang Koeppen, Ernst Jünger, Franz Kafka and Gert Hofmann. He has also edited The Faber Book of 20th Century German Poetry.
