Michael Egan (Australian politician)

Michael Egan is a former union official and former Labor politician who served as New South Wales Treasurer from 1995, when the Carr Government came to power, until his resignation on 18 January 2005. His stated reason for resigning was that, 'after 35 years of political combat, I think it's time for me to move on' [1].

Egan was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1978, standing in the seat of Cronulla. Although re-elected in 1981, he was defeated in 1984. He successfully ran for election to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1986. It was not until Labor took power in 1995 that he became State Treasurer. He was eventually to become the longest serving Minister in the Upper House. He also served as Minister for State Development.
