Michael Corinthos III

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Corinthos III is a fictional character on the soap opera General Hospital. The character is played by actor Dylan Cash. He is the son of Carly Corinthos and A.J. Quartermaine and was illegally adopted by Sonny Corinthos.

Custody battles over Michael have been ongoing on the show for over a decade. Michael was conceived when his mother Carly had a one-night stand with A.J. Quartermaine while she was involved with Dr. Tony Jones. When she discovered she was pregnant, Carly tried to keep A.J. from discovering the truth, going so far as to heft the recovering alcoholic A.J. into a laundry cart, dump him in a back alley and sprinkle beer all over him to make him think he had fallen off the wagon. Midway through her pregnancy, with both A.J. and Tony threatening to take the baby from her, Carly persuaded her former lover Jason Morgan to claim that he was the father. After Michael's birth, Carly developed post-partum depression and couldn't bear to even touch her son, who was born with a heart defect. Jason took him home and raised him for his first months. He had the baby baptized Michael after his good friend, mob boss Sonny Corinthos. Carly reappeared at the baby's baptism.

Dr. Tony Jones abducted baby Michael, thinking he was his son. Michael was recovered and Tony was put on trial. Carly shot Tony in open court and was eventually committed to a mental hospital, where Jason took Michael to visit her. Jason continued to raise Michael, this time with help from his girlfriend Robin Scorpio. Robin ultimately decided to tell A.J. Quartermaine the truth, devastating Jason and ending her relationship. Carly married A.J. to keep Michael, whom A.J. named Michael Alan Quartermaine, but the court gave Jason visitation rights. A.J. found it difficult to connect with his toddler son, who cried whenever A.J. spent time with him and was attached to Jason. Jason ultimately left town, giving up the fight for Michael, when Carly betrayed him by sleeping with Sonny.

Sonny and Carly married and Sonny strong-armed A.J. into giving up custody and then his parental rights. He had his henchmen hang A.J. from a meat hook and threatened to kill him if he didn't sign away Michael, whose name was legally changed to Michael Corinthos III. Sonny has raised Michael since he was a toddler. Michael has grown up with a mob lifestyle, thinking it normal to have bodyguards and often witnessing or hearing about violence. He has imitated Sonny's violent behavior, sometimes throwing barware, ordering his mother around, and once even ordering a hit on an enemy, although it wasn't clear if he totally understood what he was asking for. At times the parents of classmates have refused to let their children play with Michael because of his mafia connections. He's also missed a lot of school because he is frequently sent to Sonny's private island for safety when Sonny is threatened. Michael is also close to Jason, who is his biological half-uncle as well as his former "adoptive" father, but the one constant in his life is his nanny, Leticia Ortiz, who has taken care of him since he was born.

Sonny and Carly have fought over custody of Michael and his younger brother Morgan several times during their on-again, off-again marriage. Michael was abducted by A.J. in 2005 and A.J. tried to turn around the boy's thinking about his parents and about A.J. For a time it appeared that A.J. had succeeded in reversing the way Michael thought about the Quartermaines. However, A.J. had gone about it the wrong way. He had been in cahoots with mobster Faith Roscoe and had arranged for the kidnapping of all of Sonny's children. While the two younger children, Kristina Davis and Morgan Corinthos, were recovered, Michael was presumed dead. A.J. intended to take his son to another country and live there under assumed names. He was initially helped by his father, Dr. Alan Quartermaine, who sympathized with A.J. Alan ultimately turned A.J. in when he realized that his son was willing to be violent to get his way. A.J., who broke his back during a fight with his brother Jason Morgan, who was trying to apprehend him, was taken to the hospital. There, he was eventually murdered. For a time Michael was suspected of killing his biological father, but the real culprit turned out to be Asher Thomas, whom A.J. had been blackmailing. A.J. had paid Thomas to kill Jason years earlier when he was comatose after the accident that a drunken A.J. had caused. A.J. hadn't wanted Jason to be left in a vegetative state.

After the abduction, Michael was treated by Dr. Thomas for a time and was confused and alienated from his family. He eventually regained his equilibrium. Most recently, he has had to adjust to his mother's relationship with Jasper Jacks.

As he grows into adolescence, it's likely that his character will continue to reflect his upbringing.
