[edit] Background
The series dawns as Michael, having spent seven years as a fugitive, returning to his old neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island. His brother Tommy Cafee, a State representative, has risen to become the neighborhood's political boss. In addition, the rackets Michael once ruled over have been taken over by mob boss Freddie Cork. Nevertheless, Michael reteams with his old partner, Pete McGonagle, and slowly begins to rebuild his criminal empire and to also reclaim his former place within his disfunctional family.
[edit] Michael's morality
In an interview relating to the series, Jason Isaacs described Michael as follows: "Well actually, Michael Cafee is not a bad guy. I wouldn't have done this if he was a bad guy. He's a really interesting man. He has a really strict ethical code that he adheres to and he thinks he is better for the neighborhood and the future of the city than his brother is. he thinks his brother is corrupt. He's part of the system." [1]
[edit] Trivia
- Michael Cafee is inspired by and modeled after Boston's legendery Irish mob boss, Whitey Bulger. Presumably, his powerful politician brother Tommy is inspired by Bulger's own brother, former Massachusetts Senate President Billy Bulger.
