Michael Breen is a Seoul-based consultant and author of "Kim Jong-il: North Korea's Dear Leader" and "The Koreans". He has lived in Korea for many years and has a very intriquet grasp of Korean culture, society and history which makes him a prominent figure in the country's collection of expatriates.
He said it might be difficult to curtail North Korea's purchase of luxury goods. The North had people overseas purchase the goods and ship them back to the country, or bring them in personally. Kim used to have envoys buy elaborate toys overseas for his three known sons when they were children. "For the average comrade on the streets of Pyongyang, a luxury good would be a hamburger, or maybe even a second bowl of rice," Breen said.[1]
