[edit] Mansfield Town (first spell)
Boulding began his career in professional football when he was signed by Mansfield Town in the summer of 1999, having previously played for non-league side Hallam F.C. He played two seasons at Field Mill, scoring 12 goals in 66 league matches. He left the club to join Grimsby in the summer of 2001, having failed to agree a new contract with the Stags.
[edit] Grimsby Town (first spell)
Grimsby took a risk in signing Boulding first time round as he had only been a professional footballer for 2 years. He broke into the first team, initially being used as a substitute and ended up as the club's leading scorer for the 2001-02 season. This lead to him turning down a contract extension for the chance to play in the Premiership with Aston Villa.
[edit] Aston Villa
Michael was involved in Villa's Inter-Toto Cup campaign in the summer of 2002. He played twice against FC Zurich, scoring the first goal in the second leg, his home debut, to set up a 3-0 win on the night and 3-2 on aggregate. Unable to break into first team due to the presence of strikers like Juan Pablo Angel and Darius Vassell, he spent time on loan with Sheffield United.
[edit] Grimsby Town (second spell)
Mick returned around 6 months after leaving for Villa, and managed 4 goals in 12 games towards the end of the 2002-03 season, but this was not enough to stop the club being relegated. A goal-scoring start to the 2002-03 season saw him bag 12 goals in 27 games, but the dismissal of manager Paul Groves due to a poor league position lead to Michael making a transfer request and he left for Barnsley. Despite his early exit, he finished joint leading scorer for the season.
[edit] Barnsley
Boulding joined Barnsley in February 2004. He played regularly for the team under the management of Paul Hart, but lost his place in the side when Hart was sacked and replaced by Andy Ritchie. He was later loaned to Cardiff, and released on a free transfer at the end of the 2004-05 season.
Boulding reportedly came close to signing for Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2005. However, Boulding instead retired from the game. In March the next year, he returned to football and signed a short-term contract with Rotherham, but never made any first-team games for the Millers, and left the club at the end of the season.
[edit] Mansfield Town (second spell)
In July 2006, Boulding returned to the club where he started his football career, and after impressing manager Peter Shirtliff on trial, he was offered a one-year contract by the Stags. His younger brother Rory is also on Mansfield's books, playing for the Stags' youth team.
