Michael Beauchamp (fictional character)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Beauchamp was a character in the long-serving BBC Drama Holby City. He was played by Anthony Calf.

Michael arrived in Holby City in season seven as the newly-appointed Chairman of the Board. He was the husband of Holby Surgeon Connie Beauchamp.

Michael always demonstrated a ruthless streak. He appeared to care about nobody other than himself - one one occasion he had his own wife removed from duty to cover up his own negligence.

He was obsessed with success but more for his own benefit than for the welfare of the patients. He took many bribes and pursued affairs with members of staff including long-serving character Chrissie Williams. He favoured nepotism - he promoted Chrissie to Matron simply because of their relationship.

Michael's corruption lead to his downfall. A private hospital had managed to conceal the fact that they had had an outbreak of the highly contagious and (incurable) VRSA Michael was told by the hospital that if he did not conceal the condition then an envelope containing proof about all his underhand dealings would be sent to the Secretary of State for Health. Michael sought to contain the illness but in vain and caused the death of patients including Chrissie's biological father Frank. Michael was arrested for controstructive act manslaughter. He spent ten months in prison (he was released on appeal).
