[edit] History
The SEC used to be composed of seven schools throughout Washtenaw, Lenawee and Livingston County. Milan High School and Pinckney High School were also members (along with Saline, Chelsea, Dexter, Tecumseh, and Lincoln). Milan and Pinckney moved out in 1999; Milan headed for the Huron League (with Grosse Ile, Monroe-SM Catholic Central, Carleton Airport, Monroe Jefferson, New Boston Huron, Flat Rock, and Riverview); Pinckney left for the Kensington Valley Conference (with Brighton, Highland-Milford, White Lake-Lakeland, Novi, South Lyon, Howell, and Hartland [as well as Howell Parker in 2007 and South Lyon East in 2008]).
There is rumor that the SEC is still looking to expand to the possibility of hosting ten or twelve teams. Ann Arbor-Huron is still a good option since its location and independent status; and the new high school in Ann Arbor (2008) is also a possibility to enter the league. Otherwise, the league would be hard-pressed to find any other teams that were the right size in the immediate area of Washtenaw County. The two largest schools in Lenawee County are already in the SEC (Tecumseh and Adrian) and the proximity of Bedford is a hassle to everyone (not to mention the fact that most of the schools in Monroe County are in the Huron League). Also most of the schools in eastern Washtenaw County are in the MEGA Conference; the only other possibility for expansion is to look into schools from Ingham and Jackson Counties, such as Jackson-Northwest, Jackson High, and Mason.
One theory that has been thrown out there is the merging of the SEC and the KVC to create a mega-conference that would rival that of the Ottawa-Kent Conference and the CAAC. This would allow the SEC/KVC to have 18 schools that all fell in the Class A range (Chelsea is on the border) and would be great for proximity (except Milford and Hartland to Bedford/Tecumseh/Adrian) and very solid for athletics. The SEC is already a huge powerhouse in every sport except basketball and football where Ann Arbor Pioneer, Chelsea, Adrian, and Saline have consistent playoff success.
