Mezzo Morto Hüseyin Pasha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hassan Mezzo Morto or Hadji Hussein Mezzo Morto (?–1700) was an Algerian corsair, then Dey and finally Ottoman admiral.

[edit] Biography

In 1682 he was at Algiers when it was bombarded by the French under Admiral Abraham Duquesne.

In 1683 he was the commander of the Algerian corsair fleet. After another French bombardment of Algiers in that year he was offered by the Dey (de facto autonomous Ottoman governor), Baba Hassan, to the French as one of several hostages as a guarantee. Disagreeing with this, he killed the Dey and named himself Dey of Algiers.

In 1684 he signed a "100 year" treaty with Duquesne.

In 1688 he was named Turkish Kapudan Pasha (Ottoman admiral in chief).

He later fought a series of fairly successful actions against the Venetian fleet: circa 1687 (probably in 1688), 1690, 1695 and 1696, as well as almost-actions in 1694 and 1698.

He died in 1700.
