The Cristero War was a civil war between government forces and Roman Catholic rebels between 1926 to 1929. The rebellion was sparked by the anticlerical policies of the government of president Plutarco Elías Calles. The Cristeros, using ¡Viva Cristo Rey! (Long live Christ the King!) as their battle cry, were most active in the states Jalisco, Guanajuato, Colima and Michoacán in western Mexico. The Cristero war remains a controversial subject in Mexico.
