Teléfonos de México, better known as Telmex, is a telecommunications company founded in 1947 that provides telecommunication products and services in Mexico and many parts of Latin America and the United States. In addition to traditional fixed-line telephone service, Telmex also offers Internet access through its Prodigy brand.
In 1972 the Mexican government bought the company and turned it into a government monopoly until its privatization in the early 1990s, when it was sold to a group of investors headed by Carlos Slim Helú.
