Metzger, Oregon

Metzger is a census-designated place and neighborhood of Tigard, Oregon, in Washington County. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 3,354. Its name is derived from the German word for "butcher".

Henry Metzger platted the community Metzger in 1910. The south branch of the Oregon Electric Railway passed through the community, and had a stop that was located off Locust Street east of Jefferson.

Washington Square, a major shopping mall, lies immediately west of Metzger.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,354 people, 1,500 households, and 831 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,750.0/km² (4,556.0/mi²). There were 1,583 housing units at an average density of 825.9/km² (2,150.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 86.02% White, 2.71% Asian, 1.10% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.98% Pacific Islander, 4.38% from other races, and 3.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.50% of the population.
There were 1,500 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.6% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,361, and the median income for a family was $57,159. Males had a median income of $40,139 versus $28,023 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,121. About 4.2% of families and 7.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.8% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.
