Methuselah (Trinity Blood)

The Methuselah are a fictional offshoot of Humanity that appear in the anime Trinity Blood.

The origin of the species begin with the introduction of a viral infection appearing from Mars that had a parasitical effect on the body of Humans. The infection has a beneficial effect on the host as it provides numerous advantages. It provides them with an increased lifespan and increased natural abilities such a strength. This comes however at a price as the infection feeds on the red blood cells of the host and drives the host into the consumption of human blood which makes the race a threat to normal humans.

An infected person can appear almost entirely human with normal aging occuring until the virus begins to manifest itself within the body. Once this is done, the benefits provided by the virus begin to be seen with an increased lifespan allowing the 'vampire' to survive many hundreds of years.

Despite being called Methuselahs, they are called vampires by ordinary humans. The mythical comparisons are somewhat inaccurate, however, as the Methuselah can produce offspring though these children will suffer from the same viral infection. They are also not affected by light though their hearts are known to be the weak point within their physiology with its destruction resulting in the Methuselahs death.

There exists a great level of animosity between the Methuselahs and humankind, who are referred to as 'Terrans'. Within the world of Trinity Blood, they are a powerful political as well as military force with an entire nation with its capital of Byzantium which is surrounded by a feld of particles that filter out UV radiation and, thus, aids in the protection of the Mehtuselahan population.
