Methus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Methus suns are the name of two fictional artificial stars on the science fiction television series Andromeda. They were a major place of concern in the fifth season of Andromeda.

The twin Methus suns were built by the Vedrans to allow the Seefra system (also known as the future Tarn-Vedra) to survive. A certain diagram held its layouts. The Vedran put in a failsafe in the star Methus 2 to "blink out" (shut down its fusion reaction and disperse all heat) for an hour every fifty years. The inside of the "sun" is a carbon based framework that could possibly explode by being shot with a blaster. At the center, repairs can be made. Deuterium fuel was stored in its carbon "arms".

[edit] Use in the Series

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In episodes "Quartum Tractate Delirium" and "One More Day's Light", the Methus suns were identified as the final component in an advanced stellar "braking system" put in place by the Vedrans to stop the Tarn-Vedran sun in its correct orbit. In the episode "Chaos and the Stillness of It", Methus 2 was being consumed by the Tarn-Vedran sun. The characters Dylan and Rhade found Trance, a Solar Avatar, trapped in Methus 2's reactor. Once they escaped. Once Methus 2 was consumed, Methus 1 quickly followed, successfully halting the Vedran sun before it collided with Seefra-1.
