Methanococcus is a hyperthermophilic genus of methanogen. The sequencing of its genes have resulted in the discovery of many novel and Eukaryote-like sequences. A notable species, 'Methanococcus jannaschii', discovered at the base of a white smoker on the East Pacific Rise, was the first organism from Archaea to have its genome completely sequenced.
