Metaponto

Metaponto is a small town of about a 1000 people in the province of Matera, Basilicata, Italy. Administratively it is a frazione of Bernalda.

There is a bus to Matera (1h, E4), train to Sibari (1h15min,E3.50) From the station there is 2 km to the beach (Lido). Take bus line 1, last bus at 20:25. E0.7 5-15 min.

There are old ruins in Metaponte. But the main attraction is the 1 km stretch of perfect beach with white powdery sand.

The beach can be crowded with foriegners, but once they get into the water there is plenty of room. (The water gets deep only after they get 30-50 m out.) You can rent parasols and beds, but there are many free strips.

- Le Sirene next to hotel Sacco at the center of the promenade. Great seaafood and pizza.
- Pic-nic A long stretch at the northern road to the promenade. There are barbecues and small huts that sell pizza, panini, snacks etc.

The sheds right on the beach sells beer, limocelli for €2.
[edit] Sleep
- Hotel Sacco [1], at the centerpiee of the promenade. Clean, with bath room, French balcony, AC, fridge, safe. E70 (E50 low season)for a double with breakfast, +20 for half board. Checkout at noon, which give you time for a morning swim and a shower at the hotel.
- Hotel Kennedy, On the bus route 100 m before the beach.
