In Portugal metropolitan area has a specific meaning which differs somewhat from general usage of the term. With the phasing out of the Districts of Portugal, the Municipalities of Portugal have been grouped into several different types of local government entity (see subdivisions of Portugal). Groupings with more than 350,000 inhabitants are called metropolitan areas. There are 7 of these.
