Message in a Bottle tells the story of a couple whose love is sparked by a series of three messages in a bottle.

The movie's producers had originally planned to film on Tangier Island in Virginia. However, some members of the local town council objected to certain facets of the movie--specifically, the drinking, foul language, and sex. They demanded revisions to the script in return for providing permission to film on Tangier Island. Warner Brothers refused, then tried Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, but the local Chilmark Conservation Commission turned down Warner's request to build a temporary 3,000 sf house on stilts in the sand dunes near Chilmark Pond.

Two of the rental cars used in the movie had nearly sequential license plates (RZ-1551 and RZ-1553).

When Garret arrives at Theresa's apartment, the show playing on her TV (she turns it off) is Perfect Strangers. The two main characters in that movie worked at a Chicago newspaper, just as Theresa did.
