The genus Merycoidodon refers to a prehistoric mammal more popularly known by the name Oreodon.
Most researchers in paleobiology and paleontology, however, use the antecedent genus Merycoidodon to refer to this Oligocene epoch oreodont.
Taxonomically speaking, Merycoidodon (a.k.a. Oreodon) belonged to the family Oreodontidae and the suborder Oreodonta within the order Artiodactyla comprising even-toed ungulates.
