The Mermaids Soundtrack was released on November 13, 1990 in Europe and December 8, 1990 in the U.S. The album also peaked at number sixty-five on the Billboard 200. Two singles, both recorded by Cher were released to promote the soundtrack including Baby I'm Yours (originally recorded by Barbara Lewis) released as the soundtrack's first European single and the world wide hit The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) (originally recorded by Merry Clayton) which was released as the soundtrack's second European single and also Cher's first single from her album, Love Hurts. In the U.S. The Shoop Shoop Song was the soundtrack's first American single.

Baby I'm Yours, the first single was not a success managing to peak at number eighty-nine only in the UK Singles Chart. The Shoop Shoop Song however became a world wide hit. Becoming Cher's second number one hit in the UK. The song also peaked in the top ten of almost every European country. The song however failed to receive much attention from North America, peaking at number thirty-three in the U.S. and number twenty-one in Canada. Although the success in the Mainstream Airplay wasn't as strong in North America the song did receive strong Adult Contemporary airplay in both the U.S. and Canada. The song peaked at number seven in the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart and number four in the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart.

This loopy comedy got a complementary soundtrack full of whimsical pre-Beatles pop like Shelly Fabares' "Johnny Angel" and Jimmy Soul's moderately sexist (and moderately obscure) "If You Wanna Be Happy." On the more serious side, there's Santo and Johnny's gorgeous instrumental "Sleepwalk" and Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me." Cher, the film's star, gets into the act with new versions of "Baby I'm Yours" and "The Shoop Shoop Song."
